An Explanation of the Meanings of “Law” with a Focus on the Meaning of “Tamanni,” Along with Evidence from the Holy Quran

Abstract

One of the particles in the Arabic language that is used with both conditional and non-conditional meanings is the particle law (لو). This article discusses the various meanings of law, including past-tense condition, future condition, and the law that functions like a verbal noun. Special emphasis is placed on one of its meanings—tamanni (wish/desire). It is shown that although grammarians have called it a “verbal-noun particle” (harf masdari) that does not actually yield a verbal noun through interpretation, they have not pointed out that semantically it conveys the meaning of wishing. This is especially the case when it is used with the verb wadda (to wish/like) or its derivatives, as mentioned in grammar and parsing books—details that exceed the scope of this paper. Using a descriptive–analytical and library-based method, and relying on Quranic verses, the views of commentators, scholars of Arabic literature, and the author’s own grammatical-parsing analysis, this article seeks to highlight the meaning of wishing conveyed by law in selected verses. It also attempts to remove the need for assuming ellipses or engaging in forced interpretations of meaning.
