Mohammad Jawad Mughniya's Approach to Homonymy in Tafsir al-Kashif

Abstract

Abstract
Understanding the precise meaning of words and how they are used significantly contributes to the correct comprehension of a text. In all languages, there are words that have been assigned multiple meanings. In literature, these words are described as homonyms. Since ancient times, interpreters have been concerned with identifying the meaning of words, and the use of homonyms in the Quran has been a particular focus of their attention. Professor Mohammad Jawad Mughniya, a contemporary interpreter, has paid attention to literary and rhetorical issues in his book "Al-Tafsir al-Kashif". Given the importance of the subject, this research seeks to explain how he approaches the issue of homonymy. The findings of this descriptive-analytical research show that Professor Mughniya is among those who believe in the possibility of homonymy in the Quran and adopts two methods when dealing with homonyms. In the first method, Professor Mughniyeh states all the connotations of a word and then selects one from among them. In the second method, the professor explicitly states the homonymy of the word and only expresses the intended meaning. In this research, to further explain these two methods, Professor Mughniya's views on some frequently used Quranic words have been examined.
